General Assembly Meeting

On the first Thursday of every month, The Block by Block Organizing Network’s General Assembly meets.  This is the  grassroots organization that campaigned for, and won, Jean Quan‘s bid for Mayor of Oakland.  The Mission of the Block by Block Organizing Network (BBBON) is to build stronger and more sustainable communities for the benefit of ALL Oakland residents by:

• developing and building grassroots leadership in neighborhoods,
• increasing participation, communication, and transparency in all civic activities,
• influencing  policy in all democratic  institutions, and,
• working with businesses, government, community based organizations, and civic institutions to achieve social, political, and economic justice in a collaborative partnership led by residents.

Here are some suggested goals and practices the BBBON will be discussing:

• Foster transparent, ethical, and honest government which is responsive to the needs of residents;
  
• Unify Oakland’s residents by creating equity in city services and bridging the divides between “the Two Oaklands;”
• Support and work with existing community organizations.

Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club

Monthly Meeting

This is the monthly meeting of the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club (WDRC). The Club works to renew and reform the Democratic Party. The evening begins with a social hour and delicious potluck supper at 6:00 pm — bring your favorite healthy dish to share! At 7:00 pm the Club begins its program and all guests of the evening, members and non-members alike, are invited to participate in the discussions.

The featured speaker this evening will be Jean Quan, Mayor of Oakland. Last fall the Wellstone Club overwhelmingly endorsed Jean Quan for Mayor of Oakland.  Now Mayor Quan is coming back to the Wellstone Club to tell us about the first four months of her administration — what she has accomplished, and what she hopes to achieve this term including the realities of dealing with the city’s horrendous budget deficit.  In addition to the Mayor,  the grass roots organization that fueled the Mayor’s campaign, the Block by Block Networking Organization (BBON), will tell us about the work their members are doing in Oakland’s most under-represented neighborhoods

This evening’s program will be a panel discussion about the implementation of ranked choice voting in Alameda County.  How will it affect the Oakland mayoral race and how will it change local politics? Hear about the political implications of ranked choice voting, particularly how it will affect Oakland’s upcoming mayoral election.  Featured speakers this evening will be:  Esperanza Tervalon-Daumont of Oakland Rising and Bob Gammon of the East Bay Express.  Also speaking will be Gautam Dutta from the New American Foundation which specializes in this reform.   Oakland City Councilmembers, Jean Quan and Rebecca Kaplan , will attend this meeting and address the changes they envision for Oakland.  And Peter Schurman, a newly declared Democratic gubernatorial candidate, will make a special appearance.
