Evolution of Eco-Activism

Presented by Shaping San Francisco

On Thursday, March 18th, Shaping San Francisco kicks off Ecology Emerges, a four-part public forum, at the Humanist Hall.   Legendary and inspiring examples of Bay Area ecological activism over the past 50 years unfold from a collection of 23 oral histories gathered by local historian Chris Carlsson.

Evolution of Eco-Activism, the first of the four talks, will trace the birth of the modern ecology movement, from conservation and environmentalism, through to today’s recognition of the need for environmental and social justice.  Jon Christensen, Executive Director of the Bill Lane Center for the American West at Stanford University, will host the panelists  –  Jerry Mander, Karen Pickett, and Carla Perez — conversing with them and the audience.  The event will highlight a short video synthesizing the gathered oral histories and imagery from the Bay Area.

Throughout the four evenings of Ecology Emerges, 12 speakers will investigate and speak of their own personal involvement in the evolution of ecological activism, the role of the Bay Area in shaping national and international ecological movements, nature in cities, and the problem of sustainability within a growth-based economy.

This is a FREE event, and donations will be welcome.  Space provided for on-site bicycle parking.

Shaping San Francisco, a project of CounterPULSE, is a 15 year, ongoing multimedia project in bottom-up, participatory history, recovering lost history and sharing the story of daily life in the City by the Bay.  Most recently, together with the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, we launched FoundSF.org a living online history archive.  We offer a regular Wednesday night Public Talk Series and various Bicycle History Tours around the City of San Francisco.

Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club

Monthly Meeting

This is the monthly meeting of the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club (WDRC). The Club works to renew and reform the Democratic Party. The evening begins with a social hour and delicious potluck supper at 6:00 pm — bring your favorite healthy dish to share! At 7:00 pm the Club begins its program and all guests of the evening, members and non-members alike, are invited to participate in the discussions.

This evening’s program is about The Copenhagen Climate Summit and American Politics. The featured speaker will be Claire Greensfelder, co-founder of the Plutonium Free Future International Women’s Network.  Claire is a former Nuclear Free Future Campaign director for Greenpeace USA and a lifelong peace, ecology, and justice activist, writer, editor, and radio journalist based in Northern California.  She graduated from U.C. Berkeley with an emphasis on environmental education in 1975 and has spent 27 years organizing locally, nationally, and internationally for a phase-out of nuclear power and weapons and promotion of renewables, energy efficiency, conservation, and nonviolent resolution to conflict.  She most recently collaborated with Congresswoman Barbara Lee to create the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center for Nonviolence, Equality, Youth, and Ecology in Oakland.

Problems of Conservation in Tropical Countries

The full title of Sterling’s talk this Sunday morning is:  “Observations in Trinidad in Relation to Problems of Conservation of Nature in Tropical Countries.”  Sterling has just returned from the Asa Wright Nature Center — a world renowned nature destination — in Trinidad.  He will tell us all about his observations of nature there and his insights into problems of conserving nature in the tropics.
