Monthly Meeting

This is the monthly meeting of the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club (WDRC). The Club works to renew and reform the Democratic Party. The evening begins with a social hour and delicious potluck supper at 6:00 pm — bring your favorite healthy dish to share! At 7:00 pm the Club begins its program and all guests of the evening, members and non-members alike, are invited to participate in the discussions.

This evening’s program is about The Copenhagen Climate Summit and American Politics. The featured speaker will be Claire Greensfelder, co-founder of the Plutonium Free Future International Women’s Network.  Claire is a former Nuclear Free Future Campaign director for Greenpeace USA and a lifelong peace, ecology, and justice activist, writer, editor, and radio journalist based in Northern California.  She graduated from U.C. Berkeley with an emphasis on environmental education in 1975 and has spent 27 years organizing locally, nationally, and internationally for a phase-out of nuclear power and weapons and promotion of renewables, energy efficiency, conservation, and nonviolent resolution to conflict.  She most recently collaborated with Congresswoman Barbara Lee to create the Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Center for Nonviolence, Equality, Youth, and Ecology in Oakland.

Bay Area Spark Collective

Ritual Circle

Come enjoy the FireDance community and find another home in the Bay Area for your heart songs, your dance, your poetry, your music. You do not have to be a good singer. You do not have to know a single chant. Just bring your enthusiasm and your spark. The Bay Area Spark Collective is a new flame, kindled from embers carried home from fire circles around the country, an intentional community group that meets monthly to celebrate spirit, community, and each other. Pot luck supper begins at 4:00 pm. The sacred circle opens the doors at 6:30 pm. Participants introduce themselves and share their magic; the four directions are called in; a chant is sung; and a sacred play begins. From here on out, anything can happen: drumming, a song, a poem, dancing, magic, drawing, writing, massage, deep trance. As participants take their turns around the circle, they stir the container and mix in their magic to create a synergistic miracle in the space. Everyone listens to what the moment needs. Around 9:30 pm the energy of the circle rises to a fever pitch and then sweetly winds down. The circle is closed with a chant, an “Om,” that releases the four directions and plenty of hugs!

The Greater Circulation

Rainer Maria Rilke’s “Requiem for a Friend“ (via the lyrical Stephen Mitchell translation) is the heart, soul, and mind of this marvelous drama from the master underground film legend Antero Alli.  This production has a deceptively simple concept: an experimental theater company in Berkeley, California, stages a performance ritual based on Rilke’s poem and during the course of rehearsals and production the impact of the poem comes to challenge and haunt the people involved in it. And beyond this concept is a deep, provocative, and often disturbing drama which poses questions of love, art, mortality and grief with the grace and majesty of Rilke’s work.  This docufiction is a marvel of mature emotion and deep wisdom;  few films have been able to explore issues surrounding death with such grace and intelligence.  Rilke himself figures in the film via flashbacks which recreate the physical and emotional circumstances behind “Requiem for a Friend.”

The Secret of Oz

What’s going on with the world’s economy?  Foreclosures are everywhere, unemployment is skyrocketing — and this may only be the beginning.  Could it be that solutions to the world’s economic problems could have been embedded in the most beloved children’s story of all time, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”?  The yellow brick road (gold), the emerald city of Oz (greenbacks), even Dorothy’s silver slippers (silver), changed to ruby for the movie version, were powerful symbols of author L. Frank Baum’s belief that the people — not the big banks — should control the quantity of a nation’s money.  The symbols are well known, their meaning is not, yet they hold the key to solving our economic crisis.  The familiarity of the Oz symbols to the public makes their explanation a potentially powerful weapon against our modern witches and wizards.  The bottom line:  No More National Debt.  All our money is created out of debt.  But nations don’t have to borrow money from banks.  Sovereign nations can create their own money — debt free — just as Abraham Lincoln did.
