Where Volunteers are Valued
next to Nature Herself

A Volunteer with the Fellowship of Humanity has incalculable worth. The life energy of a human being, if it is spent on good works, must be cherished like a natural wonder. A person's life energy will impact society whether for good or ill. So when a person chooses to direct her life energy voluntarily into beneficial actions, she should be honored, admired, and respected (not to mention nurtured and rewarded) just as much as a pristine mountain waterfall or a wild elephant. At the Fellowship, we do everything in our power to praise, encourage, inspire, nurture, reward, and compensate volunteers.

Oftentimes, we have even been able to pay our volunteers, knowing their need for money, even if they did not initially ask for money. Since the year 2000, over fifty people have worked at the Fellowship of Humanity doing all the jobs required by our church. Anyone who does a job, does work, is a worker -- so no one escapes this title. We have been able to pay almost all workers for the hours they worked without having to clock their time ourselves. Work at the Fellowship is done on the honor system. No one stands over a worker's shoulder to keep track of her time or pass judgment on her work. And work at the Fellowship includes all the time a worker spends shopping for tools, equipment, and supplies, and traveling to and from stores. Also, a lot of latitude is given to workers to choose their own style, materials, colors, tools, methods, and pace of doing their own work. But it must be said that if a job is done poorly, so poorly that it has to be done over again, the worker responsible for it would not be allowed to do that kind of work at the Fellowship again. People who come to the Fellowship only to take advantage of its generosity are weeded out. Volunteers are workers who care about what they are doing at the Fellowship and extend themselves to make it right.

At the Fellowship we are also well aware of burn out in volunteers. We do our best not to give too much work to one person and not to let one person work too long. We make every effort to spread jobs out among several workers and to spread out the time for every job. There are usually no deadlines for jobs to be done. We like to think that the Fellowship can creep along on third-world time and still survive in this hectic society. There is no point in doing a job that stresses out its worker(s) and causes them degradation or suffering. It is the life energy of the worker that is important, the human spirit behind the work, the final product.
